What is Cloud Computing?:
Feb-15-2012
Cloud computing has become a buzz-word used to describe activity over the Internet for a while now, but what is it really, and what can it do for you? That’s what we’re here to explain.
Cloud computing is actually not as new of a concept as one might think. It’s been around for as long as email programs like Hotmail, Yahoo Mail and Gmail. If you’re accessing email through one of these services, you’re already ‘in the cloud’. The buzzword seems to have come to the forefront only recently because now this concept of cloud computing is being used in many more ways than ever before, and will continue to expand as the Internet evolves.
In simple terms, rather than storing your documents, software programs and applications directly on your computer, cloud computing refers to storing them securely online so that you have the freedom to access your personal data from anywhere you can access the Internet. This includes any mobile device that connects to the Internet. Have a Smartphone, iPad, tablet, or other mobile device – no problem, you can work from these devices and then automatically sync them with your “cloud” account so that all your devices are up-to-date. This is handy for anyone who wants to stay connected no matter where they go!
What’s more is that using applications in the “cloud” can free up valuable space on your computer that you can use to store other programs.
Another handy feature of cloud computing is its sharing capability. You can connect with friends, family, coworkers – anyone that you allow into your “cloud”. For instance, the Google Apps program offered by GSC allows you to share calendars with friends and family. Need to send out the basketball team’s schedule? Create a calendar just for that, and share it by email with everyone on the team. You can also share documents, such as presentations and spreadsheets, and more with anyone you’d like. Using the Google Docs tool (which is part of the Google Apps Suite), you can work on presentations with coworkers simultaneously, upload photos for your family to view and download, or just use it as a place to store important documents that you want to be able to access from any Internet connection. For a brief tutorial of how Google Docs can help you connect with others using the “cloud”, clickhere.
Cloud computing is becoming a popular way for people to stay connected and collaborate with friends, family, and coworkers all over the world. It allows you the flexibility to utilize applications securely over the Internet, freeing up storage space on your computer, and giving you the critical ability to sync your PC and all of your mobile devices. Your personal data is at your fingertips at any given moment. It is the here and now, as well as the wave of the future, and it’s a great way to stay connected and work on projects even more efficiently than ever before.
